You can easily export your chat history and data from ChatGPT without requiring any extra tools. Here, we will outline the process step by step for exporting your data and chats, both from the mobile application and the desktop browser.
Exporting your conversations in ChatGPT
Exporting both from the ChatGPT mobile app and the browser is possible.
From the Browser

- Go to chat.openai.com and log in to your account.
- On the left bottom of the screen, click on the third icon where your account name is displayed.
- In the opened window, click on the “Settings” button.
- In the pop-up window, click on the “Data Controls” tab.
- Here, next to the text “Export my data,” click on the “Export” button. You will see an information screen about the export process.
- After reading the information, click on the “Confirm export” button at the bottom of the screen.
- Your chat history and data will be sent to the email address associated with your account in a compressed file format.
From the Mobile Application:
Exporting from the mobile app is quite similar to the desktop:

- Open the ChatGPT mobile application and log in to your account.
- Click on the three-dot icon located in the top-right corner of the screen.
- In the opened window, click on the “Settings” button.
- In the pop-up window, click on the “Data Controls” tab.
- Click on the “Export Data” button. You will see an information screen about the export process.
- After reading the information, click on the “Confirm export” button at the bottom of the screen.
- Your chat history and data will be sent to the email address associated with your account in a compressed file format.
The time it takes to send the export file to your email address may vary depending on your data’s size. However, it is usually sent relatively quickly.
What does your exported data contain?
The export file you receive will contain your conversation history, including the questions you asked and the responses you received from ChatGPT, as well as detailed account information. The file will be in the form of a ZIP file.
To access the contents of the ZIP file, you can use any free online unzip tool or a ZIP management application.
Once you extract the ZIP file, you will find an HTML file that contains your conversation logs. You can open this HTML file in a web browser to view your conversations. Additionally, there will be JSON files that provide a structured version of your conversation logs and account information. These JSON files can be accessed and read using any text editor.
With the exported file, you can choose to share your conversations with others or keep them for your own reference. Note that exporting conversations is not the sole method for sharing them. ChatGPT also has a built-in feature to generate and share conversation links.
Exploring ChatGPT Account Settings
The settings section in ChatGPT offers more than just conversation export; it provides various other beneficial features.
Within the settings, you can delete your account, customize conversation auto-saving feature, and activate plugins and web browsing features if you are a ChatGPT Plus member.
